    <Content>&lt;p&gt;During this unit you will apply commonly used immune-based techniques in research-based scenarios to investigate the nature of immune responses in different situations of infection and disease. The unit is organised as four stand-alone weeks and has been designed to reinforce and stimulate interrogation of material in the co-requisite BIOL21242 Immunology lecture unit.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In week 1 (lab-based) you will use histology and H&amp;amp;E staining of tissue sections from infected and non-infected, normal and genetically modified transgenic mice to investigate how inflammation during malaria infection can cause tissue pathology, and use immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy of secondary lymph nodes to visualise B cell proliferation.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In week 2 (PC cluster-based) you will take an historical journey to revisit key experiments and use DNA/protein sequence and protein structure analysis to explore the nature of antibody variability and binding function.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In week 3 (lab-based) you will use ELISA to investigate the nature of what constitutes a protective response in mice infected with the murine whip worm Trichursi muris.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the final week (lab- &amp;amp; classroom-based), you will stain cells from mouse spleen during an introduction to the methodology and processes of flow cytometry, including an introduction to the process of acquisition and interpretation of data, and if activity in the facility allows at the time of the practical, you will visit the FBMH flow facility to see your samples analysed and you will interpret flow cytometry data to draw conclusions on the immune response and clinical diagnosis in different case studies of disease.&lt;/p&gt;</Content>
