BMAN73421 Comparative Business and Management 15 Semester 1 Postgraduate Taught Level 7 Stefan Zagelmeyer Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 This is an introductory course on comparative business and management that provides theoretical and practical knowledge on cross-country variation in institutions and culture, and its impact on business practices, i.e. with respect to  human resource management, corporative governance, corporate social responsibility, and operations and innovation.  This is an introductory course on comparative business and management that provides theoretical and practical knowledge on cross-country variation in institutions and culture, and its impact on business practices, i.e. with respect to  human resource management, corporative governance, corporate social responsibility, and operations and innovation.  <ul> <li> To introduce students to comparative business and management, a field of study analysing the variation in management policies and practices (i) of domestic firms and (ii) subsidiaries of multinational enterprises located in different countries.</li> <li> To explore, analyse and discuss the determinants of the variation in management policies and practices across countries, with a specific focus on culture and institutions, integrating different levels of analysis.</li> <li> To introduce and discuss the most relevant analytical frameworks in comparative business and management research, with a special focus on key theoretical and empirical academic publications as well as available comparative datasets.</li> <li> To enable students to analyse cross-country variation in management policies and practices, and to draw practically-relevant conclusions for managing domestic and/or multinational companies in an international environment.</li></ul> Intended Learning Outcomes  On successful completion of the course, students are expected to: 1. Knowledge and understanding: Demonstrate an insight into the theoretical and managerial field of comparative management, including the main analytical frameworks, available secondary datasets and key empirical literature, and in particular to appreciate the variation in management policies and practices across countries. 2. Intellectual skills: Understand how companies from and in different countries are managing in today's volatile environments, what type of analysis is available and needed to identify, analyse and explain potential determinants of cross-country variation in management policies and practices. 3. Practical skills: To use existing analytical frameworks and available secondary datasets to identify research questions for their own research projects and based on the respective analysis to identify and discuss practically-relevant management implications. At the company level students are expected to understand how multinational companies respond to and handle such variation in policies and practices across countries. 4. Transferrable skills and personal qualities: See the importance of strategic issues related to comparative management and work with others constructively in a group context.   Analytical skills At the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able analyse cross-country variations in management policies and practices and to draw practically-relevant conclusions for managing domestic and/or multinational companies in an international environment.
