This unit is delivered entirely via distance learning, including assessment. The course runs over 10 weeks, with a nominal 15h/week of student work.

A typical week consists of the following:
The unit runs in 2-week cycles with theoretical material followed by a practical video and then processing of the data from the practical into a formal report.
- An overview of the material, presenting the learning objectives for the week.
- Explanatory material (~5h of student activity/week) in the form of video lectures, the course text and links to further online resources such as videos.
- Self-Study Exercises (~2h/week), including formative quizzes.
- Practical exercises, including the processing of ‘real’ data gained in the laboratory for practical report submission. This takes the form of one formative exercise followed by a summative exercise with four practicals.
- Workshop (~1h/week). Students are encouraged to discuss the practical exercises and data processing in the forums, where tutors will facilitate peer learning, providing feedback/input where necessary.
- Tutorial (~1h every 2 weeks). Students will video conference with their tutor in groups of 6-8 to discuss and give/receive feedback.
- Reflective journal (~1 h in weeks 1 and 10 of the unit).

There is also private study of ~4h/week consisting of:
- Revision
- Coursework e.g. critical analysis of research literature
- Further practice (e.g. after the tutorials)
- Independent/further study

The times specified will vary greatly through the weeks. For example, week 7 is mostly dedicated to performing the virtual lab experiment and producing a lab report. Week 10 will consist entirely of private study and summative assessment exercises.
