This unit will explore the application of atomic and molecular spectroscopic methods to qualitative and quantitative problems in analytical science.

The theory underlying each method will be presented first, building on prior learning to level 6 in basic spectroscopic principles and extending this understanding in order to explore advanced, modern methods.

The first part will cover the main techniques in atomic spectroscopy (absorption, emission, plasma and mass spectrometric approaches), with extensive detail of instrumental aspects, data analysis and quantitation.

The second part takes the same approach, but applied to molecular spectroscopic methods (infrared, Raman, UV-visible and fluorescence methods).

In each section, extensive use of contemporary analytical examples will be used to illustrate applications and limitations.

This unit is delivered entirely via distance learning, including assessment. The course runs over 10 weeks, with a nominal 15h/week of student work.

	A typical week consists of:

An overview of the material, presenting the learning objectives for the week.

Explanatory material (~5h of student activity/week) in the form of video lectures, the course text and links to further online resources.

Self-Study Exercises (~2h/week). These are formative, with feedback for them given in the tutorial.

Discussion (~1h/week). Students are encouraged to discuss the exercises and material in the forums where tutors will facilitate peer learning, providing feedback/input where necessary.

Formative Assessment (~1h/week). This is to highlight misconceptions ready for the tutorial.

Tutorial (~1h/week). Students will video conference with their tutor in groups of 6-8 to discuss and give/receive feedback.

Reflective journal (~1 h/week). Guided by questions related to weekly subject matter.

There is also private study of ~4h/week consisting of:

Revision - Coursework e.g. critical analysis of research literature - Further practice (e.g. after the tutorials)

 Independent/further study

The times specified will vary greatly through the weeks. For example the practical week is dedicated to performing the lab experiment and producing a lab report..
