The practical nature of chemical engineering makes any industrial experience gathered whilst studying an invaluable asset. In the MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course students spend the third year on an industrial placement, allowing them to gain significant industrial experience and to develop advanced depth, breadth and practice in chemical engineering, as well as soft and transferable skills. Additionally, the Institution of Chemical Engineers accredited MEng with IE course provides students with an opportunity for further development in the following areas; (1) Advanced depth in chemical engineering (deeper penetration of knowledge and understanding than has previously been acquired in the degree programme). (2) Advanced breadth in chemical engineering (exposure to topics additional to those that would normally be considered as core chemical engineering). (3) Advanced chemical engineering practice (application of chemical engineering techniques and, if possible, innovative design).

The Process Safety Diary consists of a process safety industrial training plan and a diary documenting process safety training, experience and competency development throughout the industrial placement. The safety diary is an evidenced training record and is submitted for assessment. The diary should provide a summary of the activities carried out and the associated competencies developed, aligned with IChemE CPD and Chartership guidance. With a clear focus and emphasis on process safety management, a key chemical engineering competency, the process safety diary compliments process safety teaching delivered elsewhere in the course, e.g. CHEN20152 Process Safety, with practical experience and knowledge.
