The practical nature of chemical engineering makes any industrial experience gathered whilst studying an invaluable asset. In the MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course students spend the third year on an industrial placement, allowing them to gain significant industrial experience and to develop advanced depth, breadth and practice in chemical engineering, as well as soft and transferable skills. Additionally, the Institution of Chemical Engineers accredited MEng with IE course provides students with an opportunity for further development in the following areas;

Advanced depth in chemical engineering (deeper penetration of knowledge and understanding than has previously been acquired in the degree programme).

Advanced breadth in chemical engineering (exposure to topics additional to those that would normally be considered as core chemical engineering).

Advanced chemical engineering practice (application of chemical engineering techniques and, if possible, innovative design).

As part of the industrial placement second site visit, students undergo an overall placement performance and competency interview and deliver an oral presentation, covering a selected part of the technical work carried out during the placement. These elements are assessed by both the Academic and Industrial Placement Supervisors. The competency interview lasts a maximum of 40 minutes and provides students an opportunity to give illustrative examples as evidence of where they have performed well during the placement, in terms of planning, technical ability, initiative, etc. The content of the oral presentation should be carefully selected to give a good overview of the placement and to allow for sufficient depth of discussion. The technical presentation should contain an appropriate level of technical detail and be visually attractive.
