It is where you apply the skills you have picked up during the programme and develop as an independent data scientist under the supervision and guidance of a research active member of staff. The dissertation process will runs through the year although the bulk of the work will be done once your second semester assignments are complete. Semester 1: Project allocation/development.During Semester 1 you will receive a document outlining the projects that are on offer within your pathway. These project outlines consist of a brief description of the aims of project, the data that will be used and indications of the types of methods that would be employed. You will need to submit a form indicating your preferences by the end of January (date TBC). Alternatively, you may develop your own project. If you wish to be considered for this, you will need to submit a project outline by early January (date TBC). This will be reviewed by your pathway lead and the programme director for viability and fit to the programme.  The main issue with student generated projects is finding the right supervisor; academic input into the project outline is vital if a student generated project is to work. Your pathway lead will be able to facilitate this; talk to them as early as possible in the first semester.Semester 2: Research methods training and project preparation.On Wednesday afternoons during semester 2, the research methods training sessions will run. These are a mixture of general, transferrable skills (e.g. writing a literature review, visualisation, and reproducibility) and special topics (which any data scientist should know about even if they do not use (e.g. natural language processing, spatial analyses and probabilistic record linkage).You should also start preparing for your project during this semester – a modest investment of time now will yield disproportionate benefits later. Doing some background reading on the topic; writing a timetable for delivery with as much detail as possible; perhaps some pilot work developing the code that you will be using are all low key activities that can mean that the project itself will be less daunting when the it comes to delivery.Semester 3: Project deliveryThe bulk of the delivery of your project will almost certainly happen once you have completed your second semester coursework and exams. You will meet regularly with your supervisor during this period (see below). 4 Dissertation 100% Assessment:Ethics Form (0% but required), A project plan. (15%), A report on the project, its methods, and outcomes. This could either be in the form of a technical report or an academic paper. (60%), A presentation – a 3-5 minute recorded presentation outline the aims of the project the approach and the results – either in the form of a video poster or a slide deck.
