A dissertation often involves examining a particular topic/question in depth, with evidence of an ability to undertake sustained critical analysis. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their research/project skills and produce an important piece of written work.At a Master level, the dissertation needs to demonstrate that the student can understand how existing evidence/information relates to a particular question, and how their own work adds to this. Key skills are independent thinking and critical evaluation to enable a critique of ones own work and that of others. Students need to be aware of the implications of their work and defend the findings presented in the dissertation.  The dissertation represents half of your postgraduate degree (that is equivalent to 90 credits). MRes students are usually expected to complete a research project which often requires ethical approval through the University and other regulatory bodies (eg. NHS research ethics).  There are three options available for MRes students. These are:1.    Quantitative Research Project.2.    Systematic Review.3.    Qualitative Research Project – students must complete the module Qualitative Research methods to take this option.For those of you on the MRes we will begin discussions with you early to identify a supervisor and work towards the research plan from an early stage. The aims of the dissertation unit are:<ul style="color: rgb(60, 60, 60); font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> <li> to train the student in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project.</li> <li> to give the student experience of working (researching) independently</li> <li> to test the extent to which the student has achieved synthesis of his/her skills and knowledge via a report (dissertation) of the research topic.</li></ul> 4 Dissertation 100% The principles of feedback are as follows:<ul style="color: rgb(60, 60, 60); font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> <li> Feedback should be provided in a timely manner that helps students understand (i) the marks or grades they have received for work submitted and (ii) how they might improve their performance in the future.</li> <li> Feedback should be as personal as possible to the individual student to enable reflection on individual skills and performance.</li> <li> Students have a responsibility to consider feedback given on their work, to seek to understand it, and to act on it.</li></ul> Work based learning 600 0 0
