The course starts with a discussion group where students choose popular science articles and discuss their good and bad points.  After a meeting with the editorial team (about week 3), students propose two topics for potential articles, outlining what makes each topic interesting and what the target audience will be (week 5). The editorial team selects one which the student works up into a final draft. Feedback is available on the final draft and a finished article is submitted after the Easter vacation. To allow students to develop the skill in presenting planetary science at a level accessible to an interested member of the public after the pattern of a "New Scientist" and "Scientific American" article.  On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:<ul> <li style="margin-left: 5.7pt;"> Identify areas of research at the forefront of planetary science that are likely to stimulate interest in a non-specialist audience.</li></ul><ul> <li style="margin-left: 5.7pt;"> Develop and present their own opinion in such an area, showing how it is based on information gained from scholarly reviews and primary sources</li></ul><ul> <li style="margin-left: 5.7pt;"> Communicate this opinion and the information on which it is based in a manner accessible to a non-specialist audience.</li></ul><ul> <li style="margin-left: 5.7pt;"> Work within constraints similar to those imposed by publishers of popular science articles.</li></ul> The content of the course is at the discretion of the student.  Within the general area of planetary science and exploration it allows students to choose a subject that they find interesting, to research it, to develop the skill to explain what is exciting about it to a wider audience, and to write an article that would attract the attention of that wider audience.
