<div> <p>In turn, each student chooses a recent paper in the field. All members of the class read the paper in advance of the seminar, which the nominating student then leads. During the seminar the leader brings forward for discussion the central ideas of the paper and areas that they feel they have not understood. After each seminar the leader writes a report summarising and criticising the paper and identifying areas of uncertainty.</p></div><p>This course unit detail provides the framework for delivery in 20/21 and may be subject to change due to any additional Covid-19 impact. <div> <p>To develop in student’s the ability to gain new knowledge and understanding through reading of the research literature in planetary science, including awareness of areas that they have not understood.</p></div><p> </p>
<p><em>On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to: </em></p><ul> <li> Autonomously select publications in planetary science that cover current problems or provide new insights.</li></ul><ul> <li> Identify the central results, methods and conclusions of the publication and bring them forward for group discussion.</li></ul><ul> <li> Identify areas of the publication that they do not understand, and bring them forward for group discussion to develop understanding for all participants.</li></ul><ul> <li> Prepare a summary report on the publication describing the advance in knowledge it represents, critically evaluating its methodologies and explaining its wider relevance.</li></ul>
<p>Content varies according to the papers chosen by the student participants</p><p> </p>
<div> <p>The approach to reading the literature is discussed during the seminars and students are encouraged to develop their own style. Feedback is given on each report. Each student leads four seminars and writes four reports, the last two of each contribute to the grade while the first two are formative.</p></div><p> </p>
