This unit will involve learning the main principles of geophysical methods used to infer structures beneath the Earth's surface, including seismic reflection and refraction, electrical resistivity, gravity and magnetic surveying. The theoretical basis of these methods will be taught and that understanding then put into practice by using geophysical survey data to explore the sub-surface in a part of the university. Emphasis will be upon the selection of the most appropriate surveying techniques for the proposed investigation and integration of information from different techniques to interpret sub-surface structures. Such methods are used for practical applications (resolving structures for oil and gas exploration, civil engineering projects and in archaeology) as well as in more academic geoscience research.

This course unit detail provides the framework for delivery in 20/21 and may be subject to change due to any additional Covid-19 impact. Please see Blackboard / course unit related emails for any further updates.
