The primary emphasis is upon making observations that can be recorded in notebooks, on a map or a measured stratigraphic section, and which can be used to reconstruct the sedimentary and structural settings and events that account for those observations. The unit is of fundamental importance to all interested in acquiring, recording and interpreting geological field data. Complete peer assessment of your notebook with a friend.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Day Four: Independent mapping in the western part of the mapping area around Clumanc&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Evening: tidy notebooks and map, fill out self-assessment form 1 to critically assess your progress. Meet with your tutor for the course to discuss progress.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Day Five: Staff-led traverse to key localities along the eastern part of the mapping area.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Evening: ink-in field slip data; tidy notebooks; attempt a sketch section oriented WSW-ENE across the mapping area as a day&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Day Six: Independent mapping in the mapping area around Clumanc.   <TeachingMethods Applicant="Y" Label="Teaching and learning methods" Student="Y">
    <Content>&lt;p&gt;Teaching on the field course uses a range of methods including staff-led traverses in the mapping areas, independent mapping, one-on-one interactions with staff to discuss progress and data collection strategies, and practical classwork to develop data interpretation and presentation skills. The field course has a bespoke field handbook (hard copy) that describes the geological context of the field area, and provides detailed notes (with examples) on making, presenting and interpreting the types of field observations that are the focus of the field course. The handbook and supporting information of the field area are also uploaded to Blackboard&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During the field course students are strongly encouraged to obtain feedback on their progress by showing their work to staff several times. The field course is residential and staff are accommodated on the same site as the students to facilitate this. All assessments are submitted on the field course. Post-field course written feedback is provided, and can be augmented (on arrangement) by one-on-one discussion with staff. Further feedback and additional analysis / reporting of field observations collected on the SE France field course occurs within EART29200 Professional Development &amp;amp; Project Preparation&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Successful geological mappers are able to collect observations and think strategically about what they doing for themselves. Hence much of the teaching strategy within this unit is designed to get students to the point where they can be self-reliant in the field&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;</Content>
