The course investigates the variety of igneous rock types observed on Earth, and the processes that form them. It covers magma generation in the Earth, differentiation processes, and the links between magma compositions and tectonic setting. It examines the chemical and optical properties of the silicate minerals that make up common igneous rocks. It explains how to use practical, analytical, graphical and theoretical techniques to understand and model a variety of igneous processes, and hence interpret the origin of igneous rock samples. This unit provides the foundations for interpreting igneous rocks encountered elsewhere in the degree programme.

The aims of this course are:

1. To provide a systematic overview of the petrological and chemical characteristics of the rock-forming silicate minerals that commonly occur in igneous rocks;

2. To explain the melting and crystallization processes that produce the diversity of igneous rocks observed on Earth.

You will learn polarised light microscopy techniques to recognise the optical properties of minerals in thin section, and hence characterize the mineralogies and textures of major igneous rock types. You will investigate the diversity of igneous rock types produced in different tectonic settings, and examine how geochemical and mineralogical data are used to interpret melting and crystallization processes.

The course investigates the variety of igneous minerals and rocks observed on Earth. Students will use fundamental concepts of crystal chemistry to develop their understanding of the structure and chemistry of common igneous rock-forming minerals. Concepts such as solid solution, phase transitions and exsolution will be explored using graphical methods including binary phase diagrams. They will learn about magma generation and crystallization in the Earth, eruption and intrusion processes, and the links between magma composition, mineralogy, and tectonic setting.
