This is a two-semester unit delivered through weekly small group tutorials in semester one and into semester 2. This is supported by online material. The main focus is on acquiring and/or analysing data to test one or more hypotheses in a mini-project related to the student’s chosen pathway, and then presenting it in the form of a written report. Students will work with a dataset and learn how to organize, present and interpret data. This unit will include guidance on how to structure a report to present a narrative placing the work in context, explaining the approach, interpreting the data and assessing the extent to which the hypothesis is supported. There will be an element of teamwork in working with a dataset as a group and in presenting a summary to peers. Students will also receive guidance in employability, specifically CV writing, and consider behavioural issues related to EDIA in a professional environment.

The aim of this year-long course unit is to build on first year content in the development of professional and transferable skills to support the future employability of students in the Earth and Environmental Sciences. These skills include those related to communication, to the acquisition and treatment of data to test hypotheses, to project planning and organisation, and teamwork. A particular emphasis is on reflecting on and incorporating feedback to improve a draft of a piece of work. These skills are delivered primarily within the context of undertaking a mini-project leading to submission of a report for assessment and feedback. Specific elements related to careers and to Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) are also included.
