View of crater from close to rim. Exposure of bunte breccia.•        Alteberg suevite quarry - Suevite that was deposited from above between two large displaced blocks of limestone which also form part of the ejecta blanket.•        We may, if time allows, go to another quarry near  Iggenhausen.Day 2:•        Wengenhausen quarry - Crystalline megablock with shatter cones, covered with Ries lake limestone•        Unterwilflingen quarry  - Overturned Malm limestone block•        Aumuhle quarry (permission needed) - Suevite overlying Bunte BrecciaDay 3:•        Polsingen -  Crystalline impact melt rock outcrop•        Gosheim - Overturned Malm bedrock. Shocked fossil belemnites. Beds dipped indicative of overturn, jointing effects, search for target rock fossils.•        Otting quarry – Suevite•        Gundelsheim (permission needed) –  Contact between Malm limestone and Bunte BrecciaDay 4:•        Steinheim crater. If open visit the museum.•        Visit the crater rim viewpoint (perspective of central peak). Shatter cone hunt on crater floor. Walk to overturned rim. Walk to central peak. View post-crater lake deposits. Walk back to the museum.Day 5:•        Wallerstein cliffs - View of crater structure from top of limestone block. This limestone is located on the inner ring of crater, uplifted during transient cavity excavation. A sub-aquatic spring mound, post-crater lake environment formed here afterwards to make a topographic rise.•        Goldberg quarry - post-crater lake infill deposits (neogene lake) </div>  <div> 3 days of classroom activities in Manchester - typically run the week before the field trip. Supported by materials available on Blackboard, a briefing document, and self-research.5 days of field work at a terrestrial impact crater site (at the Ries impact crater plus travel to and from Germany).Additional supporting research papers as well as the field guide will be posted on blackboard in advance of the fieldtrip. Students are expected to study this material ahead of the fieldtrip. Teaching in the field uses a range of methods including staff-led field observations, independent collecting of data, one-on-one interactions with staff and presentations. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss progress and data collection/interpretations by showing their work to staff several times.
