Linearisation and scaling of models. Brief review of Laplace transform and transfer functions. First and second order systems. Introduction of examples for case studies.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Open-loop vs. closed-loop control. Feedback control and sensitivity. Types of feedback, PID control.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Steady state error and system type.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Root locus analysis and design. Review of PID control in a root locus framework.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Nyquist stability criterion, gain margin, phase margin.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Dynamic compensation, design of lead-lag compensators. Review of PID control in a frequency response framework.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Real-time experiments in lab sessions.     <Content>&lt;p&gt;All ILOs are developed and assessed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 1:&lt;/strong&gt; Describe a physical system via a simple transfer function model.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 2: &lt;/strong&gt;Analyse steady-state and transient properties of a system from its transfer function model.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 3:&lt;/strong&gt; Recognize the differences between open-loop and closed-loop control systems for tracking and disturbance rejection.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 4:&lt;/strong&gt; Apply root locus and frequency response techniques to analyse and design of feedback systems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 5: &lt;/strong&gt;Develop controllers for simple plant models.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ILO 6: &lt;/strong&gt;Evaluate the properties of a feedback interconnection from its open-loop frequency response.&lt;/p&gt;</Content>
