This unit will provide training to postgraduate students on research methods, product or service development and market research. The unit will include video lectures, team work, private study, individual project reports and a final presentation.

Student overview
You will work in teams to research and plan an innovative design for a product, system, component or process. As part of this you will need to consider the wider ethical, regulatory and sustainability contexts in which engineering operates. From there you will build a business case, as a pitch to a senior manager, board of directors, or external investor – this will require you to detail the scope and key risks of the project, as well as the value proposition (i.e. the cost & benefit).

Each of you will individually write up the business case as a short executive summary then justify your proposal through an oral presentation (delivered via video conference).

Throughout the unit you are encouraged to make reasoned business decisions based on evidence, and to examine the effectiveness of your team’s working practices. These are not directly assessed but will obviously have a large impact on the quality of your submitted work.

Teaching Material

The following material will be delivered:

1. Overview of unit – what are we doing and why?
2. Team working, goals and decision making
3. Reviewing literature and self-study
4. Project definition and planning: scope, resource, timelines, and risk
5. Professional responsibility: ethics, regulation, sustainability
6. Building a business case: value proposition, business model, return on investment, intellectual property
7. Presenting your case: report writing, visual display of data, oral presentations
8. Guest speakers: e.g. investors, regulatory bodies, R&D departments, startups

 <Aims Applicant="Y" Label="Aims" Student="Y">

This unit prepares students for individual or team-based research projects by introducing methods used in research and development. It aims to:

1. Prepare students for research project work through practice of:
a) Independent research/self-learning (literature review, ideation, creative problem solving)
b) Project planning (scope, resource, timelines, risk)
c) Writing reports

2. Encourage exploration of professional responsibility in the wider context in which engineering operates (ethical, environmental, regulatory, managerial, and social contexts)

3. Apply technical engineering innovations to a commercial and business context (including presenting an overview of intellectual property)

4. Improve effectiveness of team working, decision making, and presentations

This unit is delivered entirely via part-time distance learning, including assessment. The unit runs for 10 weeks, with a total of 150h of student work.

This unit helps students transition into independent study, and although it does have recorded lectures the student have more freedom to explore their chosen topics. Each group meets regularly (via video conference) with their tutor to discuss progress and next-actions.

An online project space will be set up for each team where they are able to list outstanding actions and view team progress. The presentation and report are done individually but part of their assessment is the planning and execution of their teamwork.
