Building on the foundations of the second year module, here we will explore England’s engagements with the wider world through this remarkable period, embarking on a voyage across the ‘Old Worlds’ of the Mediterranean Basin and Asia, to the New Worlds of the Americas. We will approach these encounters through key theoretical frameworks to enrich and advance thinking about the global Renaissance. Literary texts covered will range from drama to travel literature and religious tracts, to establish how England’s literary imagination was a crucible in which the nation negotiated the world. Importantly, we will consider these engagements as dynamic conversations, examining English representations of the ‘Other’ in a range of texts alongside selected texts in translation from India, introduce students to key texts and themes from the Renaissance;- introduce students to a range of genres including drama, travel writing and memoirs;- analyse the ways in which the Renaissance was a period of global interactions and exchange which emerged in the literature of the period;-  to consider issues like gender and race as they affect the literature and culture of the  Renaissance;- to engage with selected critical writings pertinent to themes covered, including transculturality and race;- to develop skills of critical thought, speech, and writing through engagement with primary and
