FBTE11502 Fashion Function and Aesthetics 20 Semester 2 Undergraduate Level 4 Lei Zeng Unit coordinator Department of Materials 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' First part HE study/Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 10.0 In this unit, the student will explore the concept of innovation and be provided with an overview of textile technologies, innovations in their employment, development of new materials and products particularly focusing upon the production of textiles for fashion applications. <div>In this unit, the student will explore the concept of innovation and be provided with an overview of textile technologies, innovations in their employment, development of new materials and products particularly focusing upon the production of textiles for fashion applications. Principles of production technology and production parameters, commerciality and costing, together with innovative solutions in creative design approaches to novel textiles/materials are explored.</div>  The unit aims to introduce the students to automated and innovative technologies for fashion production, and continuing understanding of manual and semi-automated textiles processes. Technologies within the field of fabric construction (weaving and knitting) fabric enhancement (printing), consideration to aesthetics together with novel and alternative material fabrication and other enhancement processes, such as laser technology; together with an opportunity to develop an understanding of the interface between technologies and design issues within textiles for fashion applications. The practical textile workshops and textile technology demonstrations, together with a series of lectures, seminars, independent study and student led research will introduce the student to the following areas:<ul><li>USP  </li><li>Fabric/ Technology in fashion  </li><li>Concept of function design  </li><li>Commercial use of innovation </li><li>Consumer needs  </li><li>Creative thinking  </li><li>Fabric</li></ul> A greater depth of the learning outcomes are covered in the following sections: <ul> <li> Knowledge and understanding</li> <li> Intellectual skills</li> <li> Practical skills</li> <li> Transferable skills and personal qualities</li> </ul> <ul><li>Describe and explain the processes involved in textile production, fabric structures and enhancement, weaving, knitting, print / colouration </li><li>Discuss the use of textile CAD/CAM and appropriate specialised textile production software in these textile production processes </li><li>Discuss design processes and concepts, whilst being restricted to the fundamentals of a particular technology for the production of textiles for fashion products</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes: A2. Describe and explain the properties and structures of fibres, fabrics and textile products and their related manufacturing processes. A4. Critically analyse lifecycles of fashion products, and evaluate the implications for sustainability and the environmental impact of related manufacturing processes. A6. Appreciate the role of design, creativity and visual concepts and their interrelation, in a commercial context, using digital multi-media (CAD) technologies where appropriate to develop and communicate these concepts. A7 Interpret the language of imagery and symbolic content in fashion consumption, with particular reference to forecasting, branding and product development for the fashion and textile industries. A9. Critically appreciate product requirements, innovation, enterprise and cost issues in relation to textile and garment production. <ul><li>Outline options for using current existing technologies in generating fashion textile designs / accessories / products; </li><li>Relate the appropriateness of textile materials, structures, enhancement to their applications; </li><li>Retrieve, sift and select information from a variety of sources; </li><li>Explain new approaches to utilising traditional textile production and enhancement fundamentals for textile fashion applications.</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes:B1. A variety of learning and teaching processes will be used including: lectures, discussions, group activities and independent study. Canvas will be used to present online study materials, including videos, lecture notes, guided reading, articles and other information.
