Contrary to popular belief, they are not “corrupt” or “lazy” forms of a language but represent older forms and structures that may have been lost in the modern standard language. So, this course unit takes you on a journey, not just through different parts of the German-speaking countries but also through time – giving you a chance to listen to a range of regional dialects as we hear them today and tracing them back through parts of their history over more than 1,500 years.  This course unit explores the nature and extent of regional variation in German. In doing so, it provides a survey of German dialectology (in the sense of dialect geography).  We begin with a general introduction to dialect geography (covering its purpose, history, techniques of data collection and presentation, and the most important theoretical concepts). This is followed by a brief revision of some basic phonetics (as first introduced in GERM10040 Introduction to German Linguistics) to prepare for the second part of the unit. This part first surveys the major German dialect areas (e.g. High German vs. Low German) and then focusses on detailed discussion of three individual dialect groups (chosen from Bairisch, Hessisch, Westfälisch and Alemannisch). We investigate how these dialects differ from each other, and from the Standardsprache, primarily in terms of phonetic and phonological properties. Our work will involve written materials (transcriptions) as well as audio recordings of dialect speech.  <ul role="list"> <li aria-setsize="-1" data-aria-level="1" data-aria-posinset="1" role="listitem"> To introduce students to a range of techniques of linguistic investigation, from observation of unmonitored linguistic behaviour to tightly focussed questionnaire-based study </li> data-leveltext="¿" data-listid="21" role="listitem"> To demonstrate to students the gradual development of the field of dialect geography over seven centuries, from the incidental beginnings to the role="listitem">identify a given sample of dialect material as belonging to a particular dialect group on the basis of their knowledge of key characteristics of certain groups of Low, Middle and Upper
