The following weeks will look at the history, current situation and future evolution of English as a Global language. Over the duration of the course unit, participants will examine the problematic concept of a Global English, in order to tease out the nature of those problems. Many of these areas will be explored using a case study approach which will be designed to draw on the participants’ own interests and concerns. Many of these areas will be explored using a case study approach which will be designed to draw on the participants’ own interests and concerns. <div>The unit aims to: </div><ul> <li>to make students aware of the difficulties in defining ‘standard’ English; </li> <li>to make students aware of the difficulties in defining both a ‘native’ and a ‘non-native’ speaker of English. </li> <li>to discuss the role of English in a globalised world; </li> <li>to discuss the historical dimension in English’s advance to its present dominant position, in world culture; </li> <li>to examine the cultural legacy of English, particularly in a post-colonial world; </li> <li>to discuss the impact of English on other languages; </li> <li>to examine linguistic features of new Englishes; </li> <li>to make students aware of issues in teaching and assessing English as a global language; </li> <li>to look at how English as an international language may evolve; </li> <li>to enhance students’ use of written and spoken academic English </li></ul> Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the history, current situation and possible future evolution of English as a Global language. Demonstrate a good understanding of some of the key theoretical issues surrounding English as a global language. Be able to recognise and assess aspects of the current situations of English as a Global language and to apply appropriate procedures to analyse and report on such situations. <ul> <li>show enhanced understanding of the relevance of the current situation of English to the student’s own use of English;  </li> <li>demonstrate a good ability to research and process information, and to present findings of research effectively both orally and in written form;  </li> <li>demonstrate an enhanced competence in using English for academic purposes.  </li></ul> Other Communicating in writing with clarity and concision; communicating orally in a confident and effective manner with others from a wide range of backgrounds; working in teams to elucidate and present relevant texts; making clear and confident presentations in which sometimes difficult ideas are presented with clarity and wit. 0 Other 100% Assessment task:Assignment 1: Video recorded presentation - 25%Assignment 2: Written assignment (including essay) - 75% Resit assessment:If only one assessment task has been failed, that task will be resat.  If both tasks have been failed, students will be required to resit Assessment 2.  Feedback method:Oral feedback to students on their discussion of weekly texts.Feedback orally and in writing on their Assignment 1 presentations.Feedback via Blackboard on their written Assignment 2.
