Development of the student’s analytical thinking capabilities through comparison and contrast in the application of theories and concepts to international crime. ii. To acquire an informed understanding of the basic components of justice processes iii. To examine principles and substantive aspects of international crimes including international penal institutionsiv. To appreciate emerging and international forms of justice v. Utilization of the historical perspective which helps with student understanding of evolutionary developments over time Requirements of the Course The course is ideally approached with some grounding in Public International Law. In this regard, the four compulsory courses for students enrolled in the LLM in Public International Law are designed to give students the relevant general and specialist knowledge. However, the course is designed so as to enable anyone of sufficient merit to undertake the course.  i. To provide students with the sociological theories that underpin criminal law. ii. To explore the criminology concepts that form the basis and development of crime iii. To facilitate a critical focus on International Criminal Law as a legal system. iv. Explore the substantive provisions of international crimes. v. To provide students with a critical insight into principles of international criminal law. vi. To provide an analysis of the various international criminal justice processes focusing on international courts and tribunals  i. An ability to understand the relevant norms of International Criminal Law—including customary norms, general principles, treaties, judicial decisions and writings. ii. Familiarity with the current state of International Criminal Law and the competences of international criminal courts and tribunals. iii. A capacity to identify and analyse critically criminological tenets attendant to principles and substantive aspects of international crimes.  i. An ability to collect information from the sources available. ii. An ability to analyse the subject, to recognize its assumptions, arguments, conclusions and implications.iii. An ability to criticize the information to demonstrate possible inconsistencies, omissions and faulty reasoning. iv. An ability to argue effectively and relevantly both in writing and discussion.  i. An ability to think logically, to assess competing principles impartially and to identify and solve international legal problems. ii. An ability to discuss such problems orally and to articulate relevant conclusions. iii. An ability to think independently and to use one’s own initiative in developing reforms. iv. An ability to manage one’s own study- time and meet deadlines. v. An ability to utilize search engines, navigate the Internet and make appropriate use of relevant websites. -The teaching methodology will revolve around traditional lectures and a workshop model. Lectures will set out the theoretical/doctrinal frameworks and case studies will be the zone for practical applications and manifestations of the frameworks in real life scenarios. -The purpose of the lectures is to convey information and provide a theoretical understanding of the nature of legal reasoning. Lectures, however, are not a passive exercise in note-taking and students are expected to participate by answering and asking questions. -Case studies will be primarily based on a workshop model of teaching which emphasises student constructed meaning, processes and self-assessment.
