MATS67121 Constructed Textiles for Fashion 15 Semester 2 Postgraduate Taught Level 6 Anura Fernando Unit coordinator Department of Materials 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 <div> The unit introduces students to both the design and production principles of constructed textile production processes weaving and knitting.  </div>  <div> The unit introduces students to both the design and production principles of constructed textile production processes weaving and knitting.  During the initial lecture series, the introduction to design considerations, such as fibre/yarns, weights, aesthetics, colour and palette will be presented within the context of the fashion retail and designer maker environment for fashion items, from garments to accessories.  To support this background information from the constructed textile design development, design decisions, design collections for varying fashion market levels technical information on the construction of woven and knitted fabrics will be delivered to support the students understanding.  The technical content delivery will allow the student to appreciate weave and knit technologies, weave and knit elementary and derivative structures and considerations to choosing weave and knit structures to the technology employed in the production of constructed textiles (woven and knitted).To allow the student to develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the information delivered within the lectures, there will be a series of seven seminars.  The seminars will provide an opportunity to discuss and investigate design considerations, woven and knitted textile production and support the coursework element of the unit.This handbook should be read in conjunction with the School of Materials Undergraduate Programmes Handbook that can be found on the School Intranet. (http://intranet.materials.manchester.ac.uk).</div>  <div> The primary aim of this unit is to provide knowledge of the construction of woven and knitted textile structures and fabrics used in the fashion retail industry and their application to allow the student to: Develop an understanding of the design considerations of constructed textiles, woven and knitted, for fashion applications; Develop an understanding of the appropriateness of market level for varying constructed textiles, woven and knitted, for fashion applications; Develop an appreciation of the design constraints, design process and design considerations for constructed textiles, woven and knitted; Understand constructed textile (woven and knitted) classification and their notations; Develop a basic understanding of constructed textiles, woven and knitted, performance characteristics; Develop an appreciation of aesthetics, yarn/material choices of constructed textiles and woven structure and  knitted structure combinations within fashion applications; Develop a basic understanding of fabric analysis methods.   The unit counts for 15 credits and comprises a series of lectures and seminars, supplemented through independent study and guided reading.</div>  A greater depth of the learning outcomes will be covered in the following sections: <ul> <li> Knowledge and understanding</li> <li> Intellectual skills</li> <li> Practical skills</li> <li> Transferable skills and personal qualities</li> </ul> Demonstrate and understanding of the basic knitted and woven structures that are used in the fashion retail industry;Demonstrate knowledge of constructed textile weave and knit structures and their performance characteristics;Demonstrate an understanding of the design considerations of constructed textiles, weave and knit;Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriateness of market level for varying constructed textiles, weave and knit, for fashion applications;Demonstrate an appreciation of the design constraints, design process and design considerations for constructed textiles, weave and knit.  Critically assess appropriateness of constructed textiles, weave and knit for defined market levels;Exercise original thinking in the analysis and evaluation of constructed textile materials and their applications within fashion retail;Appreciate the lifestyle choices, branding and marketing of constructed textiles within fashion garments and/or accessories at varying market levels of fashion retail;Analysis skills for the defining of fabric structure within a constructed textile;Appreciation of the specification of constructed textile structures for fashion applications;Data collection for case study analysis;Retrieve, sift and select information from a variety of sources to analyse and discuss;Research skills necessary to analyse and draw conclusions in association to a particular designer and market.   Demonstrate the ability to discern different constructed textile structures for fashion applications;Gain the knowledge of consideration to varying constructed textile technologies and their impact upon the handle, weight and aesthetics of produced constructed textiles for fashion applications;Articulate research undertaken within an academic piece of writing, using appropriate references, and executed in the style of the Harvard Referencing system;Demonstrate the ability to analyse and sift through appropriate sources of information to meet set project briefs criteria.  Communicate using a new technical language appropriate to constructed textiles (weave and knit) within the fashion and textile industry;The ability to engage in research and analysis of to inform project outcomes;Able to work independently and demonstrate time management skills in meeting deadlines;The ability to apply subject knowledge <div> <div> Lectures, group tutorials (problem sessions), recommended textbooks, web resources, self- teaching worked examples, past exam papers, electronic supporting information (Blackboard).</div></div>  1 Written exam 70% 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 30% Feedback given verbally and written.
