MATS11201 Raw Materials for Fashion 20 Semester 1 Undergraduate Level 4 Jane Wood Unit coordinator Department of Materials 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' First part HE study/Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 10.0 Students will be introduced to important textile terms that are in common use. Students will be introduced to important textile terms that are in common use. Consideration will be given to different fibres and to the advantages and disadvantages of different fabric manufacturing techniques in use across the world. The suitability of fabric selection and fitness for purpose will be considered in relation to fashion applications.    The unit aims to introduce students to the concept of fibre and fabric production methods essential to appropriate fabric development decision-making. The unit will develop technical knowledge and build a technical language for students to gain an understanding of the processes involved in the manufacturing of fabrics for the fashion industry.  A greater depth of the learning outcomes are covered in the following sections:<ul> <li> Knowledge and understanding</li> <li> Intellectual skills</li> <li> Practical skills</li> <li> Transferable skills and personal qualities</li></ul> <ul><li>Identify and explain various textile terms and fibre types;  </li><li>Outline and explain the processes that takes place in fabric manufacturing;  </li><li>Discuss the production of textile and fashion items in relation to product requirements.</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes:     A2.    Describe and explain the properties and structures of fibres, fabrics and textile products and their related manufacturing processes;A3.    Confidently judge and interpret product performance characteristics and behaviour through theoretical and scientific approaches, with emphasis on garment.A4.    Critically analyse lifecycles of fashion products, and evaluate the implications for sustainability and the environmental impact of related manufacturing processes.A9.    Demonstrate an understanding of product requirements, innovation, enterprise and cost issues in relation to textile and garment production.  <ul><li>Employ technical knowledge appropriate to fabric development to support decision making in different contextual situations  </li><li>Select various fibres, textile materials and fabric production methods and relate their appropriateness according to intended end use.</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes:  B5.    Communicate mathematical and technological information with clarity, logic and accuracy.  <ul><li>Specify appropriate manufacturing systems to fulfil specific product requirements</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes:  C1.    Select, apply and evaluate appropriate numerical, statistical and physical testing methods for complex and open-ended tasks.C4.    Identify and employ appropriate sources of information.C5.    Plan, implement and interpret results of research or experimental studies.  <ul><li>Communicate using  technical language appropriate for the fashion and textile industry;  </li><li>Demonstrate an ability to work independently and team-working skills.</li></ul>Contributing to the programme learning outcomes:     D4.    Effective engagement in problem solving, academic discussion and presentation of arguments in a professional manner to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.  This unit is delivered using a blended learning approach, which integrates technology and digital media with traditional classroom activities. A variety of learning and teaching processes will be used including: lectures, discussions, group activities and independent study. Canvas will be used to present online study materials, including videos, lecture notes, guided reading, articles and other information.
