This unit provides an overview of the application of different types of materials, and how they perform in extreme conditions, to reinforce the knowledge learnt in first semester units by a combination of taught examples and self-learning through applying concepts in the form of case studies.

The unit includes:

5 x 4 lecture topics emphasising and linking together the course specialisations (e.g. polymers & composite, corrosion and degradation, technical textiles, bio & natural materials and advanced metal alloys) in the form of multifaceted case studies connecting, materials design with performance, and durability (e.g. bullet proof vests, off-shore wind farms, gas turbines etc.). Topics will be chosen to also allow consideration of the commercial cost of production and to highlight environmental issues (e.g. energy saving, sustainability).

Student led case studies, in small teams, on a chosen material topic area to research and test multiple properties. Group project clinics to support the case study will be offered.

Preparation of a report for a lay audience with peer review of article.

Case study in the form of an e-book and a group presentation with peer review/peer marking.
