    <Content>&lt;p&gt;This unit aims to improve employability by equipping students with many of the important skills necessary for working in a commercial engineering environment. In particular, the unit focuses on project management, component design and materials selection capabilities.&amp;nbsp; The unit provides an experience of working in a team to solve a complex design challenge, which is another important aspect of industrial work. Topics include:&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Introduction to the key concepts in modern approaches in project management - to address management of a complex problem, within a team environment.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The process of design within a materials engineering context, including defining the function, identifying materials and processes, and the cost of production.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The process of materials selection within a materials engineering context, including the use of a materials selection software package.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The use of computational tools to guide the design process and inform the selection of materials required to realise a design, including an introduction to finite element analysis software (which incorporates basic CAD).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Technology readiness levels, and the development of new technologies and processes in general.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The course culminates with a Team Project that incorporates aspects of all of the above. The students are asked to design a simple beam or fibre for an application of their choice (this does not have to be a novel one), and deliver a report that not only details the design process, but also how the team delivered the project (i.e., the project management).&amp;nbsp; Students form their own groups (5-6 members).&amp;nbsp; The project is deliberately open-ended so that students take ownership of their ideas and actions.&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

Laboratory sessions are student-centred and will use software on computer clusters, e.g. Abaqus and CES EduPack; these sessions will introduce concepts and modes of thinking relevant to contemporary design thinking and provide opportunities to put these into practice. A key aspect of the labs is for the students to develop familiarity with the use of modelling software in design processes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</Content>
