This unit provides an introduction to the range of advanced characterisation techniques available in materials research, as well as to the principles that control how they operate. Topics include:

Overview of bulk spectroscopy and thermal characterisation techniques which are used in materials engineering, e. g. Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Fundamental imaging concepts used in spatially-resolved characterisation techniques: magnification, resolution, lenses and aberrations.

Wave material interactions (photons, ions and electrons).

Image based methods, e.g. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Electron diffraction methods e.g. selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) for texture analysis.

Spatially-resolved Spectroscopic techniques, e.g. energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS).

Three dimensional tomographic imaging approaches, e. g. atom probe tomography (APT), focused ion beam (FIB).
