The unit covers composite materials and structural ceramics and their mechanical behaviour. Lecture topics include:

Introduction; overview of the different types of composites (metal, polymer and ceramic matrix composites) and structural ceramics. Advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional engineering materials.

Micromechanics: continuous-fibre, short-fibre and particulate composites.

Introduction to the basic modelling approaches for elastic and post-yield behaviour, for plastic and brittle fibres and matrix systems. Examples will be given in polymer, ceramic and metal matrix systems.
