Each group will be assigned a virtual budget, which they will manage to select appropriate research facilities and technical consultancy sessions from an academic.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The students will first be given a short introductory refresher on project and budget management for research and develop&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&amp;nbsp;A detailed plan and budget will be then be drawn up in response to a research brief with supervisor, with tasks discussed and allocated by the group who will take on different roles.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Following a short course by the health and safety officer, the proposed work plan will be assessed for risk and for health and safety issues.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The students will report back at regular periods on their progress, so that the project plan and budget can be collectively modified and updated as would occur in real industrial research.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The project period is structured to provide a sequence of dates for the submission of key coursework elements, which provides the means for monitoring and assessing the progress made (building on MATS23702).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Provide experience of research in a simulated real-life R&amp;amp;D work situation.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop the skills required to manage and plan, a programme of research to achieve a specified set of objectives by carrying out an individual themed research project as part of a bigger programme team.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop the ability to apply engineering knowledge, critically assess, and prioritise information, to solve a complex problem in materials science, requiring in depth knowledge of the underlying principles.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop the ability to review the literature, discuss the results of the research and write a substantial technical report to a professional standard.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop experience in managing a project budget and designing a work programme within budgetary constraints&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop skills in presenting the outcomes of project work to a non-specialist audience&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop practical research skills and experience of research equipment and the industrial context of the research.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;</Content>
