Nanomaterials are an important class of transformative materials that are used in a range of applications from smart phones to solar energy. The unit will cover a range advanced topics in nanomaterials with a special focus on 2D materials such as graphene as well as 2D materials beyond graphene.

The course will be delivered in three parts that will occur in parallel.

The first part of the course delivered by Prof Lewis will focus on inorganic graphene analogues which are 2D materials beyond graphene.

The second part of the course, delivered by Dr Gholinia will equip students with knowledge of the latest techniques to characterise nanomaterials. There will be a focus on electron microscopy (with a literature case study of 2D materials characterisation), scanning probe techniques and spectroscopies as applied to nanomaterials. Students will go through a typical characterisation of a nanomaterial to publication standard.

The third part of the course delivered by Prof Vijayaraghavan will focus on advanced topics in graphene.

Throughout, the Unit will aim to introduce some potential societal and environmental impacts in the widespread adoption of nanomaterials.
