<UnitOverview Applicant="" Label="Course unit overview" Student="Y">

The unit introduces key imaging, characterisation and manufacturing techniques used in biomaterials research and directly links the use of these to a (hypothetical) research project based on a clinical challenge. Students will hear about unmet clinical needs from visiting clinicians and observe clinical procedures by online videos. For coursework parts (b) and (c) students will be assigned a clinical challenge in groups based on these talks (more information below). Through a series of pre-recorded podcasts, online videos and online seminars students will build a picture of the methods they may use to manufacture, image and characterise a biomaterial. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the equipment and techniques by devising, in groups, a plan to solve the clinical challenge. In addition to this students will individually create a handbook of techniques that will be a useful guide throughout their PhD (coursework part (a)).

Content on this unit:

Introduction outlining the structure of the unit and plan for remote learning.

Talks from clinicians on the unmet clinical needs they face in their work and outlining a clinical challenge for the coursework component of the unit. Associated videos of surgical procedures will be available.

A series of podcasts with related video content and literature introducing students to techniques used in biomaterials research within each of the following categories:

-Introduction to materials in medicine
-Manufacturing Techniques
-Cell Culture Techniques
-Imaging Techniques
-Characterisation Techniques

Online seminars and discussion sessions with specialists who have extensive experience in these techniques.

A series of live journal clubs to explore how the techniques demonstrated in the unit relate to biomaterials research.

Formative and summative coursework assignments to guide and assess learning.

Please note: This course unit detail provides the framework for delivery in 20/21 and may be subject to change due to any additional Covid-19 impact. Please see Blackboard / course unit related emails for any further updates

The programme unit aims to:

Build a picture of how biomaterials are used by clinicians and the real-life problems that could be associated with their use.

Introduce students to real clinical needs that could potentially be addressed using biomaterials approaches.

Introduce students to advanced manufacturing, imaging and characterisation techniques and equipment and the processes involved in using this equipment.

Connect these techniques to their applications and use in biomaterials research.

Give students the necessary tools to devise a research plan using these techniques.
