This unit gives an overview of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and its relevance in the context of biomaterials. Students will learn about the AREA framework and explore ways to apply this to their own research. In the process students will develop skills necessary to; discuss and debate RRI issues, anticipate positive and negative impacts of their research, reflect on outcomes of their research, identify and engage with key stakeholders and identify ways to incorporate RRI in their research.Content on this unit:<ul><li>History of RRI.</li><li>Relevance of RRI to biomaterials.</li><li>Policies, procedures and regulations in biomaterials.</li><li>The AREA framework.</li><li>Reflective practices to support responsible research and innovation.</li><li>Exploration of the 8 key areas of RRI (including discussion and development of ideas): public engagement, equality and diversity, science education, open access, ethics, governance, sustainability, social justice.</li><li>Application of RRI to research projects.</li></ul> Please note: This course unit detail provides the framework for delivery in 20/21 and may be subject to change due to any additional Covid-19 impact.  Please see Blackboard / course unit related emails for any further updates. The programme unit aims to: <ul> <li>Provide students with an introduction to RRI.</li> <li>Give students an awareness of the increasing requirement for RRI in research practices and relevance to their research and further careers.</li> <li>Make students aware of the AREA framework and the key elements of RRI.</li> <li>Provide students with the necessary tools and information to begin considering approaches to RRI.</li> <li>Encourage open minded discussion and self-reflective critique.</li> <li style="margin-bottom:13px">Instil good professional conduct and research ethics.</li></ul> A greater depth of the learning outcomes will be covered in the following sections:<ul><li>Knowledge and understanding</li><li>Intellectual skills</li><li>Practical skills</li><li>Transferable skills and personal qualities</li></ul> <ul><li>Define and explain the main purposes and concepts underlying RRI.</li></ul> <ul><li>Apply the AREA framework to scientific research projects.</li><li>Give examples of practical ways the eight key elements of RRI can be used within the AREA framework.</li></ul> <ul><li>Plan an RRI activity.</li><li>Work as a group on a project.</li></ul> <ul><li>Discuss and debate controversial issues in a constructive manner.</li><li>Critically reflect on their own experiences and those of others in planning future actions.</li></ul> Teaching for this unit will be remote and will comprise a mixture of pre-recorded short videos and other online content to engage with followed by associated live seminars.<ul><li>Pre-recorded short podcasts (on Blackboard)</li><li>Live seminars, discussion sessions and workshops (delivered via zoom)</li><li>Online activities and material to facilitate learning.
