MATS32270 Year in Industry - Mat Sci 120 Full year Undergraduate Level 3 Andrew Thomas Unit coordinator Department of Materials 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Last part of a Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 60.0 This unit provides an opportunity for students to develop their understanding of classroom learning in a real-life personal learning environment.  Students will develop their understanding of work and business situations and how to manage them.  This unit provides an opportunity for students to develop their understanding of classroom learning in a real-life personal learning environment.  Students will develop their understanding of work and business situations and how to manage them. They will develop their abilities through reflective practice, and will work on projects in the field of materials science & engineering. They will develop transferable skills, such as: team working, project planning, business writing and oral communication. The “with Industrial Experience” (with IE) degree programme follows the normal BSc or MEng Materials Science & Engineering degrees for years 1-2. In year 2, the students will find a 12 month, paid placement with a relevant company. In year 3 the placement takes place; it is worth 120 credits and will be assessed by an interim feedback report from the Employer at the end of November, an online presentation at the end of January, eight 250-word E-logs throughout the placement period, a reflective summary report (5,000 words) and final employer report at the end of July. This Industrial Experience (IE) year will be marked as a pass/fail by the academic supervisor. Students will then return to the university to complete their BSc or MEng Materials Science & Engineering programmes in what will be their year 4 or 5, respectively.  Students who pass the Industrial Experience year will have the opportunity to proceed on the “with IE” pathway.  If a student fails the Industrial Experience year, they can return to complete the final year(s) of their degree programme but only to obtain either a BSc or MEng Materials Science & Engineering degree only (i.e. not on the “with IE” pathway).   The unit aims to transfer skills, knowledge and understanding from classroom learning into the workplace. With Industrial Experience (wIE) students are expected to:  <ul> <li>complete subject-specific projects in industry  </li> <li>develop skills to plan, manage and execute projects in materials science & engineering. </li> <li>comprehend the industrial/commercial context of their classroom learning,  </li> <li>develop interpersonal, communication and presentations skills in a working environment,  </li> <li>apply their workplace personal management skills and business knowledge to their studies in their final year(s).  </li></ul> A greater depth of the learning outcomes will be covered in the following sections: <ul> <li>Knowledge and understanding</li> <li>Intellectual skills</li> <li>Practical Skills</li> <li>Transferable skills and personal qualities  </li></ul> <ul> <li>Explain how the placement role contributes to the company </li> <li>Describe and analyse daily routines, projects and contemporary practices within the industrial organisation  </li></ul> <ul> <li>Examine and clarify relationships between units of academic study and the industrial placement </li> <li>Question contemporary industrial and commercial practices using balanced, logical and supported argument </li> <li>Identify, investigate and solve workplace problems  </li></ul> <ul> <li>Plan, organise and manage tasks and activities relating to the placement role. </li> <li>Act with increasing autonomy, with reduced need for supervision and direction, within defined guidelines  </li></ul> <ul> <li>Communicate clearly, fluently and effectively in a range of styles appropriate to context </li> <li>Engage effectively as a member of a team and report on own team-working skills</li> <li>Examine personal performance and experience and use this as a basis for personal/professional development.  </li></ul> This is primarily a work-based learning unit. Blackboard will be used for communication, provision of information and assessment. Academic supervisors will utilise Blackboard to view coursework and provide feedback.  Regular remote meetings will occur via Zoom/Teams/Skype to establish how well the student has integrated in the workplace and developed as an employee.  In addition, the student will be required to submit short monthly progress reports (E-logs) to the Academic Supervisor, which will act as a record that the placement is progressing satisfactorily and allow for regular formative feedback to the student.  General assistance throughout the unit includes: <ul> <li>The provision of unit information via Blackboard </li> <li>Regular communication with their Academic Supervisor by email, telephone and/or Zoom/Teams/Skype throughout the placement year.</li> <li>Formative feedback throughout the unit via monthly update (E-log) reports to help students gauge their progress and to check their understanding. </li></ul>Transferable skills including business communication, project work, team work, presentation skills and writing skills will be developed in this unit.
