The role of electrochemistry in corrosion is explained and students are shown how the different experimental methods of measuring corrosion rates for metals follow from the kinetic and thermodynamic behaviours expected in different environments. Practical classes introduce students to the standard equipment used for corrosion measurement. High temperature oxidation of materials in gaseous environments is considered from a thermodynamic perspective.
