    <Content>&lt;p&gt;Students will spend two weeks in Semester 1 in an observational role in a health or social care setting. There will be an opportunity on placement to meet patients diagnosed with a&amp;nbsp; genetic condition. A schedule for the placement will be coordinated by a member of the clinical team from the hosting department. The student will have the opportunity to reflect on the placement with their first year placement supervisor. The placements will be in a variety of clinical departments within Central Manchester Foundation Trust and other hospitals and community clinics in Greater Manchester.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During the first year each student will have the opportunity to spend time observing and experiencing the clinical work in Genetic Medicine at St Mary&amp;rsquo;s Hospital. This placement will be for two weeks, four days a week, and will usually be two separate weeks, one each in Semesters 1 and 2, to suit the supervisor.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Each student will undertake an 8 week placement in a school for children with learning and/or physical disability, 2 days per week in Semester 2.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Students will be also be expected to go on 2 organised visits in the second semester after completion of the main first year placement.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;p&gt;To familiarise students with the range of health and social care services available for patients with genetic conditions.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;To increase the student&amp;rsquo;s awareness of the process of a genetic counselling consultation.&amp;nbsp; To familiarise the student with the roles and responsibilities of the different members of the team in Genetic Medicine.&amp;nbsp; Provide students with first-hand experience of the wider implications of disability and illness.&amp;nbsp; To give students an increased awareness of the impact of disability on individuals and their families.&amp;nbsp; To give students the opportunity to observe and reflect on&amp;nbsp; two specific healthcare&amp;nbsp; environments with relevance to genetic counselling.&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;p&gt;To increase the student&amp;rsquo;s awareness of the roles and responsibilities of professionals working in the NHS and in social care settings and the interactions between them, including the work of the multidisciplinary team&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To enable the student to understand and critically evaluate the NHS and social care services available for patients with a specific genetic condition&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To develop skills in interacting with professionals from a variety of backgrounds&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On completion of the genetic counselling clinic observation placement the student will be able to:&amp;nbsp; take and draw a family tree with a patient, complete a genetic laboratory request form, understand the genetic counselling process across a range of genetic consultations, prepare for a basic genetics consultation&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On completion of the school placement students will be able to:&amp;nbsp; understand&amp;nbsp; the structure and function of statutory and voluntary agencies involved in the care and education of individuals with disabilities and/or health problems, develop skills in interacting with professionals from a variety of backgrounds, gain insight into their personal reactions and feelings towards individuals and families with disabling conditions, and how this might impact on their future role as a practicing genetic counsellor&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On completion of these observatory visits in healthcare settings, the students will have:&amp;nbsp; observed a pregnant woman going through a routine appointment in an antenatal clinic, gained an understanding of the roles of the antenatal clinic team, gained an understanding of the role of the HDA Regional Advisor and some of the specific challenges faced by individuals and families where there is a diagnosis of HD&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;p&gt;As a professional taught Masters programme with a small cohort of students there are a number of opportunities for 2-way feedback between students and programme staff. &amp;nbsp;The student representative obtains peer review feedback at the end of each semester and feeds back to the clinical director and MSc programme committee meeting.&amp;nbsp; Questionnaires evaluating modules are given to students at the end of each module. In addition the external examiner meets with the students for informal feedback&lt;/p&gt;</Content>
