This unit is non-credit bearing but is essential for clinical competencies and professional development. Details of the unit will vary each week so please consult the programme.  The seminars will focus on parenting and child development in the so called "normal" situation before going on to examine the impact of both childhood disability and late onset conditions on individuals and families.  The unit will also consider issues including pregnancy : and reproductive choices for individuals and couples with genetic conditions. The small groups involved in these seminars means that teaching will be informal with an emphasis on student participation. Many of the speakers come from outside Genetic Medicine including parents of children with disabilities and adults affected by genetic conditions as well as professionals and volunteers providing care or support for people with a particular disability.  Students’ first year placements provide additional, complementary, opportunity for students to achieve the learning objectives set for this module. The unit aims to familiarise students with the wider impact of genetic disorders on individuals and families with a genetic disorder or disability.
