Each component includes one study day, incorporating pre-course reading, plenary sessions, group work, online activities and one formative assessment task.Educational Media This component consists of the following areas of study: <ul> <li> Evaluation of resources (including a pre-workshop activity and a formative assessment during the workshop day)</li> <li> Educational learning theories relevant to online teaching and learning</li> <li> Development of eLearning materials (bringing together theory and application of eLearning)</li> <li> Use of social media (including pre-workshop activities)</li> <li> Current trends and developments in educational media and online learning</li> </ul> CommunicationThis area of study introduces programme participants to a range of issues and teaching/learning processes in relation to medical students and trainees. The course unit aims to enable programme participants to: <ul> <li> Demonstrate a critical awareness of the applicability of a range of educational media resources which can be used with students</li> <li> Critically evaluate various approaches to teaching clinical communication and giving feedback</li> </ul> Knowledge and Understanding <ul> <li> Demonstrate an understanding of educational media and associated learning theories.</li> <li> Critically analyse the evidence base that underpins why communication is taught in medical education.</li> </ul>  Intellectual Skills <ul> <li> Critically evaluate issues concerned with educational media.</li> <li> Understand how theory relates to practice in relation to communication teaching.</li> <li> Observe and practice giving and receiving feedback.</li> <li> Critically analyse the use of communication skills in own teaching and that of students.</li> </ul>  Practical Skills <ul> <li> Apply a range of educational media resources in their teaching and learning.</li> <li> Design and implement detailed search strategies.</li> </ul> Transferable Skills and Personal Qualities <ul> <li> Engage in systematic and critical reflection on one's own practice and the practice of others when using educational media.</li> <li> Develop critical skills in evaluating academic resources.</li> <li> Develop an action plan for improving feedback in own teaching practice.</li> <li> Engage in systematic and critical reflection on both one's own practice and the practice of others in a variety of contexts.</li> </ul> Analytical skills Critically examine a problem, which requires attention to detail, thoroughly, with perseverance and maintaining focus. Written communication Use a range of IT skills to fulfill written demands. Study Days:  2 study days for this course unit component (1 – Educational Media; 1 – Communication), to include pre-attendance tasks, plenary sessions, group work (formative assessment tasks included).Reflective Learning Portfolio: Programme participants will meet with their peer mentor twice during the academic year. The tutor will encourage the programme participant to self-assess the Reflective Learning Portfolio and will then provide feedback (formative assessment task). 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 100% Written assignment - comprehensive feedback is provided online, using Blackboard, giving marks and written comments. Participants who successfully complete the PG Certificate are eligible to apply for full membership of the Academy of Medical Educators, without going through the individual assessment process.  Membership of the AoME allows the use of the postnominal letters MAcadMEd, and signifies that the participant has been judged to meet the AoME’s Professional Standards for Medical Educators at an appropriate level.
