This will involve identifying research questions, developing the design of a research project, carrying out the research, analysing the data and then writing up the project. This will usually be in the format of a report based dissertation or systematic review. Submission in another format may be permitted by prior approval by the programme director.  The unit aims to: <div> <ul> <li> train the student in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project</li> <li> give the student experience of working (researching) independently</li> <li> test the extent to which the student has achieved synthesis of his/her skills and knowledge via a dissertation and oral presentation of the research topic</li> </ul> </div>   Knowledge and understanding <ul> <li> Understand research design and methodology</li> <li> Understand the principles of literature review and how to apply them to their project</li> <li> Have knowledge of procedures involved in applying for ethical approval</li> <li> Have knowledge of commonly utilised statistical tests and be able to interpret results</li> <li> Understand how to write up a dissertation</li> <li> Understand the ethical and practical issues and processes involved in research</li> </ul> Intellectual skills  <ul> <li> The student will have an understanding of research design and methodology</li> <li> The student will have an understanding of various statistical tests and how to interpret the results</li> <li> Show critical thinking capacity, including abstraction, analysis and critical judgement</li> <li> Critically reflect upon and evaluate research findings</li> <li> Synthesise and analyse data and information</li> <li> Engage in constructive dialogue with peers and supervisor</li> </ul> Practical skills  <ul> <li> The student will develop literature review, statistical analysis, writing and presentation skills</li> </ul> Transferable skills and personal qualities  <ul> <li> Demonstrate independent thought</li> <li> Develop self-management project skills (e.g. time management, prioritisation of tasks)</li> <li> Communicate ideas and data both orally and in written form</li> <li> Demonstrate critical appraisal, statistical analysis and literature review skills</li> </ul> Group and 1:1 mentoring for dissertation supervision – this process is formally documented within the Masters handbook and regular meetings and signing off of key stages are undertaken.  4 Dissertation 100% Completed examiner report forms will be distributed to students.
