MEDN66110 Tutorial Unit - Reproduction & Development Tutorials 15 Full year Postgraduate Taught Level 6 Michelle Desforges Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 The Tutorial unit is a 15 credit, interactive learning course which provides students with an introduction to skills and knowledge to critically appraise, knowledgeably interpret and present research.  The tutorials will be run by academic staff who specialise in the fields of Reproduction and Pregnancy and Developmental Biology and will include a range of teaching styles including taught seminars, workshops, critiques of research papers, and discussion groups. Students will be formally assessed on individual written assignments and individual oral presentations.   The unit aims to:<ul><li>train students in data assimilation; critical analysis and debate; research data handling and analysis  </li><li>enable students to gain an appreciation of different experimental techniques as well as non-laboratory approaches to research  </li><li>enable students to gain experience in academic writing; oral presentation of research data; transfer of knowledge to others; interpersonal skills; time management; organisational skills; self and peer-assessment.</li></ul> Students should/will be able to: <ul> <li> identify and isolate basic scientific, translational, clinical (and where relevant) epidemiological, demographic and social elements of research problems</li> <li> undertake background work to provide the intellectual foundations for a full understanding of the tutorial topic, especially where interdisciplinarity demands a wider frame of reference than former training might have required</li> <li> report on the current status of research in the topic</li> <li> understand the principles of laboratory and non-laboratory research methods</li> </ul> Students should/will be able to:<ul><li>show critical thinking capacity, including abstraction, analysis and critical judgement</li><li>synthesise and analyse data and information</li><li>command of communication skills - written and spoken word and images - to engage in constructive dialogue with peers and supervisor</li><li>critically reflect and evaluate</li><li>make a reasoned argument for a particular point of view</li><li>be able to draw reasoned conclusions</li></ul> Students should/will be able to:<ul><li>use library, electronic and online resources</li><li>use reference manager software</li><li>produce high-quality slides for oral presentation</li></ul> Students should/will be able to:<ul><li>to listen effectively and make a constructive contribution to a discussion</li><li>to improve their own learning through planning, monitoring, critical reflection, evaluation and altering strategies</li><li>independently gather, sift, synthesise and organise material from various sources (including library, electronic and online resources), and critically evaluate its significance.</li><li>make a succinct oral presentation, using appropriate media for a specialist target audience</li><li>answer questions and engage in constructive debate of a specialist topic</li><li>produce a written presentation using language appropriate to a specialist readership</li><li>collect and integrate evidence to formulate and test a research hypothesis</li></ul>Also: <ul><li>schedule tasks in order of importance</li><li>use personal resources effectively to meet challenges</li><li>maintain independence of though and be self-reliant</li><li>work independently and show capacity for self-discipline, motivation and diligence</li><li>work as a part of a group to help deliver the group's objectives</li><li>show capacity for self-appraisal, reflection and time management</li></ul> The course unit will run over semesters 1 and 2 and will involve:<ul><li>a series of tutor-led sessions  </li><li>active participation from students including student-led discussions, group meetings with self-directed learning, and a group activity with peer review (give & receive).  </li><li>constructive feedback and improvement on written assignment and oral presentation. </li></ul> 0 Other 100% Individual written assignment (critique of a research paper) - 50%Individual oral presentation with tutor - 50% Feedback will be provided within the required timeframes.
