MGDI60352 Digital Business: Organisation and Strategy 15 Semester 2 Postgraduate Taught Level 7 Ping Gao Unit coordinator Global Development Institute 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 This module teaches the practice of emerging ITs and new business models, and relevant theories to analyse business model. This module focuses on business models pertaining to a set of emerging ITs in the Internet age. We will also investigate how to use IS in an organisation.We emphasise the link between theories and practices. Thus this module consists of two related parts. In the beginning 3 sessions, we elaborate the concept of business model and establish a framework for analysing IT business model. We will study some theories and concepts, and understand how they can explain the impacts of environment on business model. In the remaining sessions, we will use the studied theories and framework to analyse important practices of business models with respect to typical ITs. We will still appreciate some academic papers and enhance our theoretical knowledge relevant to business model analysis. This course aims to provide participants with opportunities to learn the theory and practice of IT/IS in the business context. It examines the emerging ITs and new business models. On completion of this unit successful students will be able to:<ul> <li>Understand the concept and components of business models, and analyse the impacts of IT and Internet on business opportunities in developing and transitional economies.</li> <li>Discuss the environmental constraints on executing a business model, the characteristics of current IT innovation and new business models</li> <li>Develop a set of theory-based tools and conceptual maps for uncovering the relation between Internet-based information systems and the adoption of novel business models.</li> <li>Explain critically the role of IS in business organisations, and the relationship between information systems and business strategy</li></ul> 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 70% 7 Oral assessment/presentation 30% <ul><li>Written assignment (2,700 words)</li><li>Oral assessment/presentation (300 words)</li></ul> In each session, the first and last 10 minutes are for Q&A.
