Developing successful information systems Whether in public, private or non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector, organisations spend huge amounts of capital on IS investment. Such heavy reliance and investment in IS have increased the need and importance of managing IS effectively. This module looks at some key concepts regarding the process of IS development and the issues important to successfully introducing an IS in an organisation (though the lessons here apply equally to introducing an IS for group or community use, and apply equally whatever the specific terminology used – m-government, e-commerce, social media, etc – for the project). The unit aims to: - introduce hard and soft issues that affect the successful development and implementation of information systems in developing and transitional economies - provide training and critical examination of the steps and various tools and techniques required to analyse, design and implement information systems - examine the role of social and human factors and participative techniques in information systems development - provide the opportunity to put analysis and design skills into practice By the end of the module, you should be able to: <ul> <li> Describe different approaches to the introduction of new IS</li> <li> Select and apply appropriate tools and techniques of systems analysis and design, relevant to the context of developing/transitional countries</li> <li> Analyse and design a prototype information system</li> <li> Plan and recommend the implementation of an information system</li> </ul> <ul> <li style="margin-left: 36pt;"> link theory to real-world practice</li> <li style="margin-left: 36pt;"> critically analyse ISD methodologies and techniques</li></ul> <ul> <li style="margin-left: 36pt"> apply IS analysis and design skills, using a variety of tools and techniques</li> <li style="margin-left: 36pt"> apply sensitivity to human and practical issues in IS development and introduction.</li> <li style="margin-left: 36pt"> utilise user participation skills</li> </ul> <ul> <li style="margin-left: 36pt;"> group working</li> <li style="margin-left: 36pt;"> discussion and debating skills</li> <li style="margin-left: 36pt;"> literature reviewing</li></ul> Each face-to-face 3-hr lecture session includes lecture presentation, case study material, student group activities and exercises, and group discussion. Tutorials are optional and provide further practical exercises and case studies. Additionally, students are expected to engage with e-learning materials provided via VLE to support learning. These include lecture slides and exercises, extensive session notes, model solutions to exercises, links to research papers and websites, etc. The course is highly participative, encouraging students to share knowledge and experience.
