The unit aims to: introduce students to some of the biggest challenges facing the world in the 21st century. The course is complementary to the other core semester 1 course for all MSc Global Development students - Development Fundamentals - which examines
history, theories and different actors in and of development. Global Development
Challenges is focused on a series of contemporary mega challenges which are global in scope. They are global in the sense that they relate to both global North and South, albeit unevenly, and cannot be 'solved' by one part of the world alone, yet simultaneously involve major inequalities in their underlying causes and consequences.

 </MarketingOverview>
 <UnitOverview Applicant="" Label="Course unit overview" Student="Y">

After an introductory lecture considering the big picture of 21st century global development, the course proceeds to examine a series of global development challenges across the three domains of prosperity, people and planet. At least two lectures will cover mega challenges related to each of these domains. Each lecture will introduce core concepts that provide insights into the extent of the problem, outline some of the key areas of debate, and assess some of the potential and limitations of various solutions. The final section of the course will focus on addressing global development challenges, including the roles of different stakeholders, cutting-edge agendas and the interactions between different issues. The course will also include a series of challenges via workshops associated with the prosperity, people and planet themes. Topics will be included here that are timely and that GDI staff are researching, so the course can be adaptive to emerging issues and available expertise.
