The theoretical part of the course builds on the Year 2 Development Microeconomics course unit and uses concepts introduced in the Year 1 Skills 2 course unit; the Year 2 Intermediate Statistics course unit is also recommended to student considering taking Health Economics.  This course is an introduction to theories and evidence relating to health economics in the Global South. The theoretical part of the course builds on the Year 2 Development Microeconomics course unit and uses concepts introduced in the Year 1 Skills 2 course unit; the Year 2 Intermediate Statistics course unit is also recommended to students considering taking Health Economics.Weeks 2-4 cover the demand for healthcare. This part of the course introduces theories that can help to explain individuals’ and households’ decisions about healthcare expenditure. Much of the theory is relevant to healthcare across the world, but will be discussed in the context of the Global South.Weeks 5-7 cover the supply of healthcare, healthcare markets (including theory and evidence on the possible causes of market failure), and the economics of public healthcare policy.Week 8-10 vove specific dimensions of health, including child labor, mental health, and infectious diseases.The tutorials will involve exercises utilizing real-world data, developing students’ competence in Excel and Stata.
