Indices of risk were used to score those fetuses requiring extra surveillance by screening. Eventually, the risk categorisation shifted away from the fetus to the pregnant woman. Whole aspects of women&rsquo;s lives including their psycho-social and medical status were plotted as points on a risk continuum. Thus, women were characterised as either high or low-risk within a spectrum of outcome possibilities. The traditional, holistic model of pregnancy and childbirth for midwives was placed parallel to a technocratic or medical model which has arguably resulted in the increased use of intervention. This unit will provide midwives with the opportunity to critically explore, and contextualise, the concept of risk during the childbearing process in contemporary midwifery practice in the UK and in</div><div> international settings. Students will critically examine the philosophies of care and policy drivers affecting the assessment and management of risk. Students will be afforded the opportunity to critically review and synthesise contemporary evidence with respect to care pathways for women with complex medical needs in childbearing.</div> <div> Concepts and meaning of risk in childbearing: definition, social constructs.</div><div> &nbsp;</div><div> Is the allocation of risk a foregone conclusion within the hospital paradigm?</div><div> &nbsp;</div><div> The driving forces impacting on risk during childbearing including: social, psychological and cultural</div><div> factors affecting risk aversion.</div><div> &nbsp;</div><div> Models of risk and how general models from large corporate organisations have been integrated into</div><div> health care delivery.</div><div> &nbsp;</div><div> Political forces affecting the perception of risk, government white papers and Department of Health</div><div> guidance, and international perspectives on risk in the maternity services.</div><div> &nbsp;</div><div> Key areas of midwifery practice that will be used as focal points for critical appraisal and review:</div><ul> <li> Why mothers die</li> <li> Pathophysiology of medical conditions</li> <li> Litigation and defensive practice</li> <li> New dilemmas for the maternity services:</li> <li> Eating disorders, maternal age</li> <li> Specialized roles and mutli-disciplinary teams.</li> <li> Well-being: the fetus v the pregnant woman</li> <li> Environment and delivery of care.</li> <li> Intervention: Iatrogenic outcomes e.g. infection</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li> Critically review concepts of risk in childbearing and relate these to clinical practice.</li> <li> Critically explore evidence-based practice for women with complex medical needs during the childbearing continuum.</li></ul> <ul> <li> Critically examine the concept of risk in contemporary midwifery practice including the articulation of key antecedents related to complex medical conditions.</li> <li> Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the strategies and care pathways that have been developed for women with complex medical conditions during the childbearing continuum.</li> <li> Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the patho physiology of complex medical conditions during the childbearing continuum.</li></ul> <ul> <li> Recognise and critically evaluate underlying assumptions related to risk in childbearing.</li> <li> Critically review appropriate evidence that impacts on risk in childbearing.</li> <li> Critically examine the appropriate strategies for managing risk in childbearing.</li></ul> <ul> <li> Debate the demographic factors influencing the concept of risk and how the midwife as a member of the multi-disciplinary team affects the delivery of contemporary maternity care.</li> <li> Identify and critically review the appropriate evidence-based care pathways for the needs of women with complex medical conditions during the childbearing continuum.</li> <li> Appraise and apply national and international guidelines which influence decision making for women with complex medical needs during the childbearing continuum.</li> <li> Identify Public Health strategies and critically review the role of the midwife when utilising strategies that help to minimise factors influencing adverse outcomes for women developing complex medical conditions across diverse populations.</li></ul> <ul> <li> Critically reflect on own academic performance and utilise a range of strategies to improve these and overcome any particular difficulties.</li> <li> Further develop and enhance skills in effective communication to a range of audiences in a variety of settings.</li> <li> Demonstrate skills in working collegiately and effectively with others as a member of a team</li> <li> Effectively utilise a range of information sources including information technology / health informatics</li> <li> Utilise skills in systematic and creative approaches to problem-solving and decision-making in relation to complex issues</li></ul> <div> The teaching and learning for this unit takes place over one semester. Learning methods utilised involve face-to-face tutorials, seminars and workshops, supported by online learning. Some resources will be available online including video clips of interviews with key personnel, guided activities, and reference material. Directed study components comprise additional exercises and specified reading related to each key maternity practice area reviewed.</div> 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 100% <p>Students will normally have the opportunity to receive feedback on formative work submitted prior to the summative assessment. Other feedback opportunities will also be available in class and online discussion boards. Online feedback is provided in Grademark. Provisional feedback based on internal marking will be made available prior to the Exam Board on the basis that these marks are yet to be ratified at the Exam Board and therefore may be subject to change. A standard feedback mechanism in Grademark is utilised across all postgraduate programmes within the School which provides detailed and constructive feedback on each component and aspect of assessment and identifies areas of strength and those aspects which could be enhanced.</p><p>Student feedback is obtained through open discussion forums on blackboard, in class discussions, via formal University
