    <Content>&lt;div&gt;	In response to the agenda within health care to work in new and innovative ways this course unit is&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	designed to prepare midwives and neonatal nurses for the enhanced role of newborn infant physical&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	examination which is a screening procedure, under the guidance of the National Screening Committee&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	(NSC) The NSC benchmark is that the examination be carried out within the first 72 hours of life and&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	again at 6/8 weeks. Building on the existing knowledge and experience of often experienced&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	practitioners, the course unit provides the additional knowledge and skills involved in screening of the&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	cardiovascular system, the eyes, developmental dysplasia of hips and undescended testes; aspects of&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;	screening which have previously been within the province of the medical practitioner.&lt;/div&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;ul&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		The historical background to examination of the newborn and the current context for this role for midwives and other healthcare practitioners.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		The legal, ethical and professional implications of examination of the newborn baby.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Assessment of the term newborn baby in relation to the following systems:&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Cardiovascular and respiratory systems.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Nervous system.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Gastrointestinal system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Genitro-urinary system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Skeletal system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Immune system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Reproductive system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Musculo skeletal system&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Psychological aspects of examination, and an awareness of the skills required to answer queries of parents and on occasions the breaking of bad news.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Identifying and activating appropriate referral mechanisms.&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;		Keeping accurate records of examinations by utilising the systems in place in the individual trusts.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;p&gt;To enable the practitioner, to acquire, in-depth and up-to-date, knowledge and skills to undertake the enhanced role of newborn infant physical examination, to recognise deviation from the normal parameters of newborn health and to make referral to other disciplines where necessary.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The individual will also be prepared for their role in exercising accountability in communicating the outcome of the screening to parents and in making accurate records of the examination.&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

    <Content>&lt;p&gt;Students will normally have the opportunity to receive feedback on formative work submitted prior to the summative assessment. Other feedback opportunities will also be available in class and online discussion boards. Online feedback is provided in Grademark. Provisional feedback based on internal marking will be made available prior to the Exam Board on the basis that these marks are yet to be ratified at the Exam Board and therefore may be subject to change. A standard feedback mechanism in Grademark is utilised across all postgraduate programmes within the School which provides detailed and constructive feedback on each component and aspect of assessment and identifies areas of strength and those aspects which could be enhanced.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Student feedback is obtained through open discussion forums on blackboard, in class discussions, via formal University unit evaluation forms and also qualitative, in house evaluations at the end of the unit.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;</Content>
