NURS10061 Simulated Practice Placement 1 20 Semester 1 Undergraduate Level 4 Ljubisa Paden Unit coordinator Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' First part HE study/Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 10.0 During this unit, students will be given the opportunity to develop a variety of academic skills and strategies that support the delivery of evidence-based nursing care. Students on this unit will also have the chance to practise and reflect on their ability to perform patient assessments, along with a range of clinical skills and procedures. Additionally, students will develop, rehearse, and improve communication skills with colleagues and individuals across all stages of life, addressing various physical, cognitive, and behavioural health challenges. Furthermore, they will be introduced to the fundamental skills required for the safe administration of medicines. These skills will be important for their future career development in nursing and are essential for life-long learning. This unit combines on-campus workshops, online simulated learning modules, and fieldwork. Attendance for this unit contributes to the 2,300 clinical practice hours required by the NMC. It is essential to demonstrate attendance and engagement both on campus and online, as this is carefully monitored and recorded. This unit introduces students to the fundamental skills required for effective communication, clinical practice, and professional development in nursing. Students develop essential communication and relationship-building skills, with a focus on compassion, therapeutic interaction, and culturally competent care. They also learn to adapt communication for specific client groups and begin building confidence in interprofessional communication. Core clinical skills are introduced, including infection control, moving and handling, basic life support, first aid, and initial patient assessment. These are reinforced through functional and mental assessment workshops that cover key activities of daily living. Students apply their communication and assessment skills in a holistic, person-centred way. Students are supported to develop safe and effective medicines management practices using virtual learning tools, addressing legal, professional, and practical aspects of drug administration. Furthermore, they will complete e-Learning for Health modules to consolidate knowledge in areas such as safeguarding, infection control, and patient safety.  They will also participate in a neighbourhood study, a field study designed to help students better understand the needs of communities in Greater Manchester, assessing the social determinants of health, community resources, and local populations.  Throughout the unit, there is a strong emphasis on personal wellbeing and safety, including stress management, mindfulness, and de-escalation techniques, preparing students for the demands of clinical practice.   <ul><li>Provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of academic skills and strategies that will support their efforts to deliver evidence-based nursing care.</li><li>Provide opportunities for students to rehearse and reflect upon their ability to undertake aspects of patient assessment and a range of clinical skills and procedures.</li><li>Provide opportunities for students to develop, rehearse and reflect upon their ability to use a range of strategies for effective communication with colleagues and with people at all stages of life who may have a range of physical, cognitive and behavioural health challenges.</li><li>Introduce students to the fundamental skills required for the safe management of medicines.  </li></ul> At the end of the unit, students should be able to:  A. Knowledge and understanding    <ul><li>A1 Apply the nursing process as a fundamental framework for care within a simulated and real environment, demonstrating effective communication strategies that underpin each stage of the process.  </li><li>A2 Discuss how nursing is guided by relevant laws, policies and regulations, and their importance in safe and ethical practice.  </li><li>A3 Outline the principles of safe, evidence-based and effective nursing care, and reflect on how these principles inform practice.  </li></ul> B. Intellectual skills<ul><li>B1 Recognise the importance of literacy, numeracy and information technology skills for academic and professional learning, and review ways to develop these skills for lifelong learning.  </li><li>B2 Explain the concept of reflexivity and discuss how reflective thinking contributes to professional development and practice.  </li><li>B3 Discuss the concept of accountability in professional practice and recognise its relevance to safe and effective nursing care  </li></ul> C. Practical skills<ul><li>C1 With specific reference to their field of practice, apply knowledge and communication skills and strategies for effective verbal, non-verbal and written interaction with colleagues and service users within simulated contexts and community settings. These communication and relationship-management skills may include a range of those specified in Annexe A of the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses.  </li><li>C2 With specific reference to their field of practice, apply knowledge and skills to undertake nursing procedures within simulated contexts and community environments. These procedures and skills may include a range of those specified in Annexe B of the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses.  </li><li>C3 Demonstrate numeracy, literacy, risk-assessment and technology skills through simulated practice, recognising how these support safe and effective nursing care for individuals, families and communities.  </li><li>C4 Demonstrate accurate record-keeping (including electronic records), and reflect on the importance of maintaining these for safe nursing practice  </li><li>C5 Demonstrate knowledge, skills and confidence to provide first aid procedures and basic life support in line of evidence-based guideline  </li><li>C6 Demonstrate knowledge and skills to apply the principles of safe moving and handling, including risk assessment, ergonomic practice, and the use of appropriate equipment and techniques, in accordance with health and safety legislation and local policies.  </li><li>C7 Demonstrate knowledge of, and apply standard infection prevention and control precautions in line with evidence-based guidelines.  </li><li>C8 Describe safe approaches to medicines handling in simulated activities, identifying the principles of accurate calculation, safe storage, administration and monitoring for abnormal reactions.</li></ul> D.
