NURS14110 Midwifery Practice 1 40 Full year Undergraduate Level 4 Alice Ciolino Unit coordinator Nursing & Midwifery 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' First part HE study/Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 20.0 This unit will introduce you to the core clinical skills required for professional midwifery practice and familiarise you with the support networks available within the clinical learning environment. The unit will enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in basic midwifery skills. Within the clinical learning environment you will be further supported to develop these skills by participating in the provision of maternity care across the pregnancy continuum. Throughout this unit you will learn through a variety of approaches, including taught sessions both face-face and online. This includes lectures, small group work, practical skills-based workshops, clinical simulation, e-learning, podcasts, and practice based learning in the clinical environment. Indicative content <ul> <li>Introduction to practice-based learning and familiarisation with the support networks available within the clinical learning environment </li> <li>Introduction to the core clinical skills required for midwifery practice – including: basic clinical observations, the use of Maternity Early Obstetric Warning Score (MEOWS), venepuncture, basic life support skills, introduction to microbiology and infection control, donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) and moving and handling.</li> <li>Learning is linked to the NHS Core skills E-learning modules required for Year 1 healthcare students.</li> <li>Skills acquisition in a clinical setting: proficiencies defined in the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA).</li> <li>Reflect on the clinical experiences of observing and participating in the provision of midwifery care through the pregnancy continuum for a small caseload</li></ul> <div style="border:solid windowtext 1.0pt; padding:1.0pt 6.0pt 1.0pt 4.0pt">The unit aims to:<ul> <li style="border: none; padding: 0cm;">enable learners to apply their acquired theory of professional midwifery practice in clinical situations under the direct supervision and direction of qualified health professionals.</li> <li style="border: none; padding: 0cm;">support learners to develop their understanding of clinical practice through reflection.</li></ul></div> <ul> <li>Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the midwives’ role as a skilled practitioner across the childbearing continuum.</li> <li>Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key health and safety issues related to clinical practice, including moving and handling, infection control and basic life support.</li> <li>Understand the principles and rationale for accurate record keeping, appropriately sharing findings and escalating concerns. </li> <li>Demonstrate clear knowledge and understanding of the best-practice infection control measures employed in the clinical environment. </li></ul> <ul> <li>Use reflection to evaluate own skills development and professional practice related to the provision of care across the childbearing continuum.</li></ul> <ul> <li>Demonstrate professional behaviour by enacting NHS England’s 6 Cs.</li></ul> <ul> <li>Participate in planning, implementing and evaluating plans of care in partnership with individuals and families to anticipate and prevent complications.</li> <li>Demonstrate appropriate principles and skills regarding infection prevention and control, following local and national policies and protocols.</li></ul>  <ul> <li>Demonstrate professional accountability and reflect on their own performance.</li></ul> <ul> <li>Demonstrate through participation in student midwife continuity of carer the ability to build kind, trusting, and respectful relationships and work in partnership with women/people across the childbearing continuum.</li> <li>Ability to communicate and share information with women and their families with respect, kindness and compassion, and conduct person-centred conversations that promote health across the life-course.</li></ul>   The intended learning outcomes (ILOs) and aims are all constructively aligned to ensure the teaching and assessment methods support the learners’ achievement of these to the highest standard.
