The unit aims to introduce more complex techniques in ophthalmic dispensing, explore how this is applicable in practice, and the associated frame and lens technology. <ul> <li>Understand the theoretical background relating to the design and manufacture of spectacle frames, multifocal and complex single vision lenses, and tints and coatings.</li> <li>To use appropriate calculations to justify dispensing decisions.</li> <li>Evaluate a practical scenario in dispensing and select and explain an appropriate method to address it.</li> <li>Measure and specify multifocal, and complex single vision lenses. Measure, describe and specify spectacle frames using the correct terminology.</li> <li>Complete a comprehensive assessment of facial measurements.</li> <li>Specify accurately appropriate frame and lens positioning.</li> <li>Application of all the theoretical, technical and numerical information in a patient/practice situation. (this will be developed further in 3rd year clinics).</li></ul> Analytical skills As measurement and numerical skills are constantly tested against set benchmarks, students regularly evaluate the solutions to problems. Group/team working Most labs have the opportunity to work in pairs or in some cases as a small group. Problem solving The application of a theoretical, numerical and practical approach, to problem solving is used throughout the course. Research Students are encouraged to maintain an awareness of current developments, promoted in professional and technical journals.
