OPTO30200 Clinical Practical Sessions 40 Full year Undergraduate Level 3 Claire Mallon Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Last part of a Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 20.0 This module gives you the opportunity to practise your clinical skills on real patients, who attend the Optometry Teaching Clinics, under the supervision of qualified staff. A culmination of the theory and practical knowledge you have gained in the first two years will allow you to see patients in the following clinical settings: general eye examination, contact lenses, low vision assessment, dispensing, orthoptics, further investigative techniques and paediatrics. To enable students to acquire the clinical skills necessary for entry into the pre-registration year following graduation. <ul> <li> Demonstrate clinical understanding in all of the clinics covered in the unit</li> <li> Demonstrate practical clinical competence in each of the areas covered by the unit (GOC Stage 1 Competencies)</li> <li> Develop effective clinical communication skills.</li></ul> Analytical skills Experience in reviewing patient records to determine normal and abnormal findings and pick out salient points requiring investigation and follow-up. Participation in case discussions during clinical record tutorials. Group/team working Co-operative working in small groups during some clinical sessions e.g. Paediatrics, Binocular Vision, Further Investigative Techniques, Contact Lenses Oral communication Regular taking of patient clinical histories and discussion of optometric management with patient and supervisors Problem solving Establishing the patient's presenting problem(s) if symptomatic and determining an appropriate course of action with assistance of the clinical supervisor Written communication Via regular record keeping and completion of management plans in most clinics. In depth clinical experience in: optometric examination, contact lenses, ophthalmic dispensing, investigative techniques, orthoptics, paediatric optometry, low vision and case records. 0 Other 100% End of unit station exams (75%)<ul> <li>Station/OSCE exams (n=2) covering the GOC stage 1 core competencies – at the end of each semester.</li></ul>Clinical Management (1 hour preparation and 30 minute viva, 25%)<ul> <li>Examination involving review of several optometric case scenarios that include the clinical presentation, refractive findings and results of various supplementary investigations.</li> <li>Candidates will be required to prepare all the scenarios for discussion during the subsequent viva and to write a letter of referral in relation to one of the cases.</li></ul> Periodic feedback of clinical performance with release of core competency results and at the end of each clinic session.
