OPTO30651 Contact Lenses B 10 Semester 1 Undergraduate Level 3 Carole Maldonado-Codina Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Last part of a Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 5.0 Contact Lenses B builds upon the second level ‘Contact Lenses A’ unit and provides you with a detailed understanding of the signs, symptoms, aetiology and management of various contact lens complications. You will also learn about specialist contact lens instrumentation and speciality lenses.The unit runs alongside a separate practical clinical programme (embedded in OPTO30200) where you will undertake all aspects of contact lens practice on fellow students and real patients and where you will also carry out your GOC-mandated core competencies and patient episodes. To amplify the knowledge gained in the Contact Lenses A unit in order to allow students to successfully fit and manage contact lens wearing patients in practice. Students should be able to:<ul> <li>understand how to fit various types of contact lenses (‘entry level’ clinical skills)</li> <li>understand how to carry out different contact lens appointment types</li> <li>understand the application of contact lens grading scales and how to use these in record keeping in clinical practice</li> <li>understand the complications associated with contact lens wear</li> <li>understand how to identify the causes of problems in contact lens wear</li> <li>understand how to effectively manage patients in relation to their contact lens wear</li> <li>understand the implications of systemic disease in contact lens patients</li> <li>understand extended wear contact lens fitting and what specialist advice and aftercare needs to be given to these patients </li> <li>understand and appreciate new advances in contact lens practice.</li></ul> Analytical skills Analyse key findings of journal articles; identify key issues. Online exercises and example assessment questions develop analytical skills involving data interpretation. Students are encouraged to ask questions in live seminars and online discussion boards and to think about how the material covered in this unit and other units is linked. Group/team working Students are able to take part in group discussions and debates relating to the issues and topics covered via discussion forums and seminars. Oral communication Students are encouraged to answer questions and to ask questions during seminars. Problem solving The assessments in this unit require problem-solving skills involving clinical scenarios. Additionally, understanding information in relation to the syllabus topics requires an ability to assimilate information and problem solve in the context of the exam question being asked. Research Students have a significant amount of current contact lens research presented to them during the course and they are encouraged to seek out and read the publications discussed in the learning material as well as undertaking additional reading to extend their knowledge. Written communication Students are encouraged to prepare for their written final assessments by preparing outlines for questions. There is also an interactive discussion board where students can interact with each other and the unit coordinator. Other Development of clinical skills which will be directly relevant to students' employment as an Optometrist. This unit will be delivered by a series of online learning sessions and activities as well as live seminars with associated content viewed on Blackboard. Feedback before the final assessments and examination will be provided through in-class discussions of MCQs and written answer questions and provision of a discussion forum on Blackboard where students are able to direct questions to the module coordinator and view all discussion threads. A post-exam feedback document will be posted on Blackboard as well as individual feedback and guidance, when requested.
